Chapter Fourteen

Koi watched Tally subtly check Reagan’s pulse. When she moved her hand to her friend’s back in what appeared to be a gesture of support, she’d been monitoring her respiration rate. He wasn’t sure Reagan had realized what was happening, since she was still reeling from her earlier flashback. He and Tally had been driving near Rafe Newell’s home when they’d gotten the call from Phoenix Morgan. Koi had to give the man credit, his timing was impeccable—they’d only been a half mile away, and from what he’d heard, Taz had been even closer.

Leaning against the breakfast bar, he watched Taz pull his phone from his pocket as he disappeared into what looked like an office. Pulling out his own phone, Koi typed a quick message to Micah Drake at Prairie Winds asking for a quick run-down of the situation. He sent a similar message to Phoenix. The two men worked together, but he’d learned a long time ago that, even given the same intel, different people would have slightly different perspectives of the exact same problem. Those minute differences often held the key—that one small detail often meant the difference between success and failure of a mission.

Phoenix sent him the report he’d pulled together so far, but there wasn’t much detail about the man everyone was certain had orchestrated the attack on Reagan. After reading the medical report, it was a fucking miracle she wasn’t having flashbacks on a regular basis. The facility’s documentation indicated Reagan had said very little to the first responders, but the sworn statements from the EMTs who’d treated her once she’d been wheeled to the outside secured perimeter were entirely different.

The female EMT told the investigator that Reagan clutched her hand pleading with her to keep the prison staff away. She’d been particularly terrified of the Chief of Security—the Major she’d previously reported for inappropriate sexual advances.

When his phone buzzed again with an incoming message, he was surprised to see Micah’s message. I’ve attached both official and unofficial reports, but I’d suggest you contact Kirk Evans or Brian Bennett. They are members of the club, and Reagan was working for them as a Physician’s Assistant when she was attacked. They helped her move to Montana and put her in touch with contacts who helped her find a job.

What had started out as mild curiosity about Tally’s friend was quickly turning into a cause. Why hadn’t this woman’s testimony been taken seriously? If something like this had happened to his sister, Koi would have been homicidal. He thanked both men for their help and moved into the living room. It was obvious Reagan was exhausted, but he suspected she wouldn’t rest until everyone left.

“Tally.” Both women shifted their attention to him, but he kept his focus on the woman he’d planned to spend the afternoon getting to know. “Come. It’s time to go. Reagan needs to rest, and she isn’t going to do that with everyone hovering over her.”

“But…” He cut her off with a look any trained sub would recognize.
